Chelsea Flower Show 2011

May 22, 2011

I am really looking forward to the Chelsea Flower Show tomorrow. I’ve been going pretty much every year since about 2004 but this will be my first time at the press day. It’s always a bit of a spectacle and love it or hate it (I am in the love camp) it is an inescapably significant date in the annual gardening show calendar. Over the course of the month of May the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea are spectacularly transformed into an unrecognisable stage for high horticultural theatre. This year it seems the designers are going bigger and taller than ever before what with a floating garden, 9 metre tall tower of edibles and giant concrete columns modelled on Roman ruins. I’m already dizzy with excitement just at the prospect of seeing it all.

Here are some of the show gardens I’m particularly itching to see:

Chelsea 2008: I was lucky enough to get an inside view of the madness and to be a part of the build-up to the show 3 years ago when I helped to plant up the Daylesford "Summer Solstice" garden (by del Buono Gazerwitz)

I hope you’ll be taking photos of all of these! Many of the Chelsea garden designs aren’t for me, but there are always so many inspiring ideas!
